More than half of UK gamblers say higher betting taxes could drive players to unlicensed sites, according to a poll commissioned by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC).

The survey follows the government’s decision to raise duty on online casino games and online sports betting (excluding horse racing). A Treasury spokesman expects the increase to generate £1.1 billion a year by 2030.

Key findings from the poll

  • 52% of bettors fear the tax rise will push customers to black market operators.
  • 66% say higher taxes will make betting less enjoyable.
  • Over 22 million people in the UK place a bet each month.

Industry representatives argue that higher taxes will not reduce demand but will make licensed operators less competitive. They warn that illegal platforms do not pay tax or provide consumer protections.

The Treasury says the additional revenue will help fund public services, including the NHS, and is part of broader tax reforms. Meanwhile, ministers are taking steps to limit unlicensed operators’ involvement in sports sponsorships.
